Last week Staffordshire Barn Owl Action Group reached a milestone when John and Ivan installed the 400th barn owl nest box to go up in the county. The group has been installing barn owl nest boxes since 2001 and monitoring the boxes since 2005.
As the numbers of barn owls have dramatically declined over the last 60-70 years the barn owl nest box scheme has proved to be a very effective way to help in the conservation of this beautiful farmland bird. Since 2005 the group has found 204 pairs of barn owls and 471 barn owl chicks are known to have fledged from the nest boxes that the group has installed in Staffordshire.
